Founded in 1992, following 12 years of denominational infighting among Southern Baptists, the William Whitsitt Baptist Heritage Society was birthed by moderate Baptist historians concerned that fundamentalism endangered much of traditional Baptist heritage.  For the next 20 years, the Society published a Journal, met annually during the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship General Assembly, and presented the annual Courage Award. The Society closed in 2012. The Society's legacy is carried on through the writing of young Baptists on the subject of freedom of conscience in select essays published Baptists Today.

"Whitsitt, for whom
the Society is named,
was professor of
Church History and
President of the
Southern Baptist
Theological Seminary.
In 1899, he was driven
from office by
Landmarkism's
littleness and
narrow-mindedness."
